Effect of dust event timing on glacier runoff : sensitivity analysis for a Tibetan glacier

چکیده

The impact of the timing of dust deposition on glacier runoff was evaluated using a glacier mass–balance model with a newly improved scheme to track a dusted layer in a snow layer of a glacier. The lowering of surface albedo due to the dusted layer appearing leads to a drastic increase of glacier runoff even under the same meteorological conditions. Calculations of seasonal sensitivity, the relationship between dusted date and resulting runoff, have shown that dust deposition during a melting season might cause a drastic mass outflow from a glacier through changing the surface albedo during the melting season. Source and biolability of ancient dissolved organic matter in glacier and lake ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau is the world’s largest and highest plateau and holds the largest mass of ice on Earth outside the icesheets of Greenland and Antarctica, as well as abundant lakes. This study examined the molecular and isotopic signatures of dissolved organic matter (DOM) along with its biolability in glacier ice, glacier-fed streams, and alpine lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. The aim was to a...

Geometric dependency of Tibetan lakes on glacial runoff

The Tibetan Plateau is an essential source of water for Southeast Asia. The runoff from its∼ 34 000 glaciers, which occupy an area of ∼ 50 000 km2, feeds Tibetan lakes and major Asian rivers like the Indus and Brahmaputra. Reported glacial shrinkage likely has an impact on the runoff. Unfortunately, accurate quantification of glacial changes is difficult over the high-relief Tibetan Plateau. Ho...

Present‐day and future contributions of glacier runoff to summertime flows in a Pacific Northwest watershed: Implications for water resources

[1] While the impacts of long‐term climate change trends on glacier hydrology have receivedmuch attention, little has been done to quantify direct glacier runoff contributions to streamflow. This paper presents an approach for determining glacier runoff contributions to streamflow and estimating the effects of increased temperature and decreased glacier area on future runoff. We focus on late s...

Glacier mass variation and its effect on surface runoff in the Beida River catchment during 1957–2013

Using in-situ measured data from Qiyi Glacier, in combination with meteorological and runoff data from stations, a distributed degree-day model was developed for 631 investigated glaciers in the Beida River catchment to explore glacier mass change and its effect on streamflow. The results showed that the average mass balance was −272 ± 67 mm w.e. a, with an ice loss of 3.99 Gt during 1957– 2013...

International Workshop on Terrestrial Water Cycle Observation and Modeling from Space: Innovation and Reliability of Data Products Determining geometric links between glaciers and lakes on the Tibetan plateau

The Tibetan plateau and surrounding mountain ranges contain the largest amount of ice outside the polar region. The Tibetan plateau also contains more than one thousand lakes and is the origin of a large part of the water resources of South and East Asia, the most densely populated regions on earth. Recent studies concluded that the glacial area on the Tibetan plateau and surroundings has decre...
